On the Site

"I imagined that if I could build a home in the middle of the stars,
I would come closer to understanding their secrets.
I thought that if I could look into the heart  of their light, I could read their story."
Mani Bhaumik (IYA2009 Patron), The Cosmic Detective

GalileoMobile will pass from areas where astronomy outreach is not already done by another project but, at the same time, places that have high sky quality and can therefore establish an astronomy teaching programme after we leave. Most of the time we will be visiting schools in small cities or villages, thus benefiting from low light pollution.

We plan to spend an average of two days at each site, during which time we want to play educational games, design simple experiments and exchange myths and stories on the stars. We will organize observations with our telescopes which will open to the public, during daytime to observe the Sun and during the night to observe the Moon, stars, planets and other celestial objects.

Finally, we will give a Galileoscope as a gift to every school we visit (a kind donation of IAU and UNESCO), along with astronomy posters and postcards from our partner, ESO. Along with the Galileoscope we plan to leave an astronomy activity guide and a catalogue of celestial objects, which we hope can help teachers and enthusiastic students build up an astronomy club.
